Forcing the Opponent to Stick to Us? Are You a Warrior Bro? | The Kung Fu Genius Podcast #146
What a charming man he was...
I think isometrics have some value, but honestly its pretty limited. Years ago, i clearly remenber a guy at the gym who did Isometrics only for quite a while. He had a lean looking sinewy physique. He also ran. He finally decided he wanted to do actual weight training. I can tell you his stamina sucked! He started off strong, but by the time he got to 4 or 5 reps he was gassed. I think its like anything else. A particular method of training may have value, but people mess up and think that's all they need. And I know you brought this up in the video. I always love watching these.
Great comment. What you wrote illustrates the exact reason why I mentioned in this video that putting all your eggs in one training basket as the total solution for all your physical training needs is erroneous. As for your specific example, it makes sense that if you apply one type of strength training philosophy religiously (isometrics in this case) that you will suffer in other areas as the training isn’t there. But your experiment could’ve been run in reverse that someone with a regular weight training routine being very weak on some of the same isometric exercises that the other guy did. It’s all about what you’re training and what you are developing. Also, full intensity one rep strength is a different beast than continuous work for reps, sets, and time. It’s a bit of a false equivalency to compare a pure strength development method with muscular endurance or volume set training. One doesn’t judge running ability by how heavy one can do a squat. I have had competitive marathon runners gas out when I put them on a heavy bag for 3x 1 minute intense rounds despite the fact that they can run at a steady state for hours, which is something I cannot do. They have aerobic capacity up the Yin Yang but no anaerobic capacity for that type of work. Training methodologies are sport and activity specific. I would use isometrics to develop a really killer grip when I hold onto someone but not for sustained punching conditioning.
@@TheKungFuGenius Yes I agree with you. That's why it's important to train in many ways. One time at the Boxing gym, I also remember an endurance athlete trying to do a 3 minute round on the heavy bag. He was dying. He's good for sustained effort running for miles at a time, but that's completely different from what you need for punching and explosiveness. Of course if you're competing in a particular sport, you'll specialize in that. But to be well rounded, it's best to train in a variety of ways. I always hear people argue about weights vs bodyweight training. There's no need to have to choose one or the other. You can do both!
Funny side note. If anyone gets a chance to get out to Oregon. Check out Sifu David Leung's school. They have a concrete floor that has some kind of polished sealant on it. And then they have a tub of baby powder you can step into to make your shoes super slippery. I've seen guest instructors go in there and not even be able to move without slipping all over the place while they are teaching. And, at the same time, the students who train there regularly, fly around as if it was a totally normal floor. The first time Grand Master Chen Zhenglei from the Chen village went there to teach, he had noticed how slick the floor was and said that everyone there must have very strong legs. By the way, Master Chen had no problem on that floor. Very good gongfu👍
So happy I found your show. You have a new fan man. I'm subscribing and going to go through your videos. As a martial artist since 1982 and 15 time UFC vet, pro boxer, kickboxer and JKD practitioner your perspective on Bruce Lee is identical to mine. I find myself feeling like I'm in a tug of war trying to defend Bruce against the guys that say he was just a movie star but at the same time needing to explain he was still just a man... With flaws. Which the nut huggers can't hear.
Welcome on board, it’s an honor! I’m glad you’re enjoying the content.

“Everlasting Green”, was a pulp story, that told the story of the Five Elders 😳just like “Green Grass Monk” in Choy Lee Fut, also a Pulp story 😬
I believe our styles all come from an unbroken line of fiction lol
did his movie ever get made?
Hey KFG, when you say bao zhang dao.. i hear it mandarin instead of cantonese. It sounds to me like Wrap Palm Knife. Zhang or Jeung in cantonese sound like palm instead of elbow/forearm... Or does it actually mean elbow/forearm? Btw my mandarin and cantonese is practically zero. Just a few words here and there. :)
Comparing Cantonese and Mandarin phonetics is occasionally helpful as there is some simple overlap in sounds, but it will often lead you astray as the two are vastly different in terms of pronunciation, even among the common words. The Cantonese pronunciation for the word for elbow (㬹or jāang) has a superficial similarity to palm (掌zhăng) as it’s pronounced in Mandarin, although both the character and the tones are different. These differences are further illuminated in the fact that the Cantonese word for elbow is only found in Cantonese and is not even found with a mandarin equivalent. Mandarin uses the formal word zhou (肘)for “elbow“ which no self-respecting Cantonese speaker would use in its Cantonese equivalent for fear of sounding like a newsreporter speaking proper Chinese. The two languages are different enough that many scholars do not consider them dialects of each other, but in fact, fully separate languages with a common root. So go easy on the comparisons!
@@TheKungFuGenius wooow, good to know. i've come across bao zhang dao along time ago to hear you say it gave me de ja vu, all this time i might have been mistakenly assuming it'smandarin.. for a weapon set that likely southern. Zhang and jaang sounds so close but not close enough apparently. :)
Hmmm, this could be controversial, probably not on the level of baby reindeer, though😅
You said only adults could handle this information. Already I've found not just people trying to explain away Lee's Cocaine use, but claim that he was referring to Anabolic Steroids. There's no evidence whatsoever that he was using Steroids. Also, the name 'Cocaine' didn't have the same bad connotation that it has today. It hadn't been too long before that it was being used in everyday products.
Astute comment sir!
@@TheKungFuGenius Thanks; I admire Bruce Lee but he never tried to put across that he was a saint. Why should we?
you know nothing
You hide behind a sock puppet account getting upset about stuff you voluntarily watched. Manly!
Bro! You have to watch his knife and gun defense, which is traditional, lol
Падший, наверное, это един путь его счастья.
Yeh he taught Bruce karate according to some people on RUclips and then Bruce taught him JKD apparently. How that works I have no idea 🤣
Liked and shared.

Holy Kato Kaelin, Batman! Do I have a spin on this? You BET I do! <--Stoned Age survivor here, who started Shorin Ryu in '66 at age 12. Career musical entertainer and outre artist for 50 years. I know a bit about partying. It seems evident that Bruce was running a drug ring in Hongkong. My guess is that it's easier to attract talent (and producer interest) when you're the one with the party supplies. Sammy Davis Jr had the same tiger by the tail. Also, high profile partying means high profile call girls and escorts and those are easier to obtain when you have "endless" supplies of blow. Ask Conor. Speculating here, but from my own observations and the experiences of certain associates in the past, it's natural to think: "I can get it; why not cut it, sell it to associates, and make enough back to support my habit?" I am here to tell you that never works. You end up hip deep in debt to your supplier. That stresses you out more, which means you cut the coke more, till your associates start to give you "that look". In China, "that look" can lose you a throne. In fact, you end up floating/freebasing, which makes you a better host for the cocaine virus. Check with Richard Pryor for more on that. And Chevy Chase. And The Greatful Dead. And John Belushi . . . google "Speedball". Anecdotally, LSD does many things for many people, but I know better. Having artist friends who still use it (in their 60s) as a performance enhancer, in my experience it doesn't make you smarter or more in tune with the universe. It chemically lowers your sensory threshold. All the rest is you. Useful in some situations under appropriate supervision? Perhaps, but where are you going to find an appropriate supervisor? In a Hollywood party bathroom? Doubtful, but not altogether impossible. I cite Tim Leary. From my own experience I can tell you that finding Zen inside of practice is what hashish does best. It's one of the reasons we'll never nuke Afghanistan. What- too soon? As for psilocybin (mushrooms), although nowadays considered a "trip" drug, it is a natural drug with great therapeutic potential, but no experts to properly administer it. American Shamanic rituals are rife with psilocybin, peyote blossoms, weed, and perhaps a bit of toad licking. Don't ask how I know all this stuff. Just accept and go on with your lives. Hehe.
New subscriber here genuinely loving your insight particularly the “ castle episodes “ which remind me of the mid 80’s “ wing chun wars “ in the UK ( hilarious and scary at the same time ) with some genuine hard skilled fighters One genuine question….. “ shouldn’t a fighting style ( any style ) be able to work / be effective against others styles ?” Example Boxing still works against kick-boxing ( if you close the distance - I’m trained in both ) bjj can spar with boxers / kick boxers ( see RUclips ) It seems ( based on a lot of filmed evidence) Wing chun ( which to be clear I love as an art - I was a mid level student- first / second form / dummy form / approx 4 years of hard chi sau ) really struggles in open fighting ( a paradox as it was designed to defeat other Chinese boxing styles ) What do you think is the solution? Much respect
Great comment!
Even with all that..I still love him...my inspiration in life.the best example of a human being.❤
Dan said in an interview, Bruce would still use Wing Chun, in a real fight

Ur so right
I think ramsey dewey is his name lol
Ur So right
I LOVE these story’s thank you ⭐️ It’s also interesting to be reminded of the endless pointless politics of Wing Chun It’s what killed it imho as a global martial art ( along with lack of effective sparring in the RUclips generation)
Omg it's obvious from the book "Bruce Lee: the art of expressing the Human body " that isometrics was one part of the picture to his power but not the sole part, but like most humans, people want to focus on one part of the picture.he also included high speed repetitions with his normal exercises with weights which would have helped in the development of explosive strength aka power.
OMG
And none of this matters to me I am still a big Bruce Lee fan and always will be!💯❤️
H oil is hash oil FYI
This guy IS a GENIUS! Great show
I'm really digging this

Mikey “Poison Hands” D
His hands are so poisonous that he can’t even touch himself.
That Ashita Kim description is priceless.
The brain and its function in stretching and flexibility is pretty interesting.
Absolutely
I trained with him a handful of times in the early to mid eighties. His BS style and story aside for a 40 odd year old bloke at the time he was extremely fast and athletic. He had natural movement and athleticism. Ip Chun at that time was early 60s. I used to look after him when he visited. His speed of hand was and still is something else. Hard to comprehend. Skill is a factor but genetics play a role.
As a turk I'm offended Dre!!! 😂😂😂
Tell him directly! He never reads comments haha
Well you delivered again Mr KFG!Another fine episode. As Yoda would say "a purple patch you have reached, quality content is regularly produced!😊
Wow, thanks!
IP Chun was said to me personally. He couldn’t understand why William Chung didn’t claim it as his own work. He put a lot of effort into it. That said he pointed out the shortcomings of his system. I was friends with a journalist at the time and I had a copy of the infamous interview on tape. It’s comical😂. Having trained with Ip Chun since the mid 80s it’s fluid in its purest form unlike the BS normally taught. The biggest problem stems from the fact the HK culture like to gossip and run each other down instead of training hard and just getting on with it.
Man I learned the wing chun system from siu nim Tao, chum kiu and the dummy form ans that was it. My "sifu" thought he was Bruce Lee and created his own *system that combined other stuff that he was actually a master in. Was it bad? Yes. He tried to build a cult and used rank as a weapon. Later I went and learned some different wing chun and wing tsun stuff and it didn't seem so different but I could tell the students had a WAY better understanding of fundamentals
Great Show!! Must’ve been recorded on May 5th, because Dre is looking like a Cholo!!!😂
Haha
Knicks lost their last 2 when was this filmed live?
I´ve always wanted to read Ashida´s kim amorous adventures, but I was unable to find a copy :D Must be hilarious
The KFG putting Mikey’s health insurance BEFORE his own retirement 🔥🙌🏻🫡
Thank you for answering my question. I wasn't implying that the late BL used actual chow gar or karate in his training. I was referring to the dynamic tension method as sport specific movements executed under muscular tension which could be different for everyone. I used the chow gar and katas examples because you said you have trained in chow gar and the two katas are easy to find on yt. Please transfer the 5 dollar superchat to the kimono fund.
Thank you!
What I find astonishing about the statements from Chuck and Joe Lewis (rest in peace), is that they were the ones who taught things to Bruce, they were much better than him, Bruce was just an actor, etc. Joe even criticized Bruce several times for his kicks. Okay, I accept this opinion, but in that case, why did they all agree to train with Bruce, and that for several years? Why agree to train with a guy who is just an actor and who hasn’t even delivered a good kick? How could Bruce be a ‘teacher’ to these champions when he seems to have so many technical imperfections? Yet, they still spent several years training with him. That’s why their statements don’t make sense to me.
Just to say that you have a very interesting podcast and that I try to watch it whenever I can! I just have one observation I'd like to make about this episode... I don't know much about the American Black Dragon, but there was a legitimate Japanese secret society called kokuryukai - The Society of the Black Dragon. It was founded in 1901 by a Japanese ultranationalist, and played a prominent role during the conflict against Russia and the annexation of Korea. Its members were used in acts of espionage, sabotage and even murder, much like shinobi of old. It was probably the reason why the screenwriter of the film Bloodsport included the kokuryukai in the film. Greetings from Portugal
Ninja? Ninja? I have your girlfriend 😂😂
Great stuff! :)
